Arachnophobes Beware

I found this guy out behind my grandma's garage in October. He had strung his web between the garage and the chainlink fence next to it. For size comparisons, he is about the size of the palm of your hand...slightly larger with his legs spread out.

Banana Spider: I never learned the scientific name, and don't care to look it up right now.

While I was back behind the garage, I saw some old cane poles hanging on the wall. I used to use those old cane poles to catch catfish, bass, and brem out of Bernie's Hole in St. Augustine. They are now bonded (permanently, I believe) to the wall with spiderwebs. I really ought to throw out our fancy rod/reel gadgets in favor of these...There's just something about fishing with a cane pole that makes it special...not to mention easier.

Yikes. That is one big spider. I don't usually mind spiders too much, but that is one I would SO not want to find.

I have stepped through a couple webs with these guys in them before *shiver*
But I saw one spider at the beach that was HUGE, thick, and black, and had a green metallic spot on his back, if my memory serves me right. That one freaked me out.

Mind over matter. The fangs on these spiders are so miniscule, they're harmless.

Damn strong webs, though - and unsettling to walk through, especially when they're freshly spun and still sticky. YUK.

There's so many people who tell me "ahhh, they're poisonous!" and I have to constantly tell them that is a myth.

Ugh, I go through their webs fairly often while mowing the back corner of the yard. It's the worst when there's a huge banana spider crawling all over your face. *shiver**agh**shiver*
