Friday Florida Crackerism

This is the start of a new series called the "Friday Florida Crackerism," which will consist of different "cracker wisdom" sayings posted on the Friday of every week. I will get most of these sayings from my own personal experience and also some from literature such as that by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings. I will also do my best to spell in the vernacular so that proper pronunciation can be achieved by my friends from other geographical areas. I hope you find this both entertaining and thought-provoking.

Today's Florida Crackerism is:

"Ya cain't git all yore coons up one tree."

Anybody want to take a stab at what this means? There's a popular corollary that has something to do with baked goods...

Answer Posted 2/12:
"You can't have you cake and eat it, too."
"Don't put all your eggs in one basket" would be acceptable, too!

Note: News on my property-purchasing plans will come soon.

Hmmm, it brings to mind not putting all your eggs in one basket or something along those lines. I read Rawlings eagerly, but it was some years ago I'm afraid.

I'm delighted to find someone your age so creative, sensitive to his history and ethnicity, to the wide world of books, to the created beauties and historic past of northern Florida--and I hope to the Creator. Hats off to your mentors and parents. Keep on evaluating, appreciating, writing.

Love your new Friday deal! Being stuck down south in New Havana, I don't get to hear many southern sayings. I get strange looks when I say "reckon" and I say it alot, probably on purpose. I reckon I best start doing some chores now...y'all have a good day!

TO ALL - You all had very good ideas, but FloridaCracker gets it right yet again.

threecollie - Close! I couldn't imagine myself reading Rawlings if my soul was not completely attached to the setting of The Yearling. It seems like it would be tough from non-Floridians to understand many of the references and descriptions...But it's a learning experience, I guess!

anonymous - Well thank you! It's not by choice, but Florida is just a part of who I am. And the Creator certainly has a stake in me...even though it's not always obvious.

scott - hmmm...A loud thunderstorm? I don't know!

swamp - You ought to see people's reactions in my particular area now when I say "reckon." They look at me like I have lizards hanging from my ears.

paint - I figured I would leave you in suspense (evidently suceeded in that) and wait for a couple more answers :-D
I was reading the paper on the front porch about 6:00 this morning and it was 51 degrees...I went inside because it was too cold and there were mosquitoes pestering me :-D

FC - You're too danged good.

Too cold...TOO COLD!!!!!! Come visit us...it is in the negatives at night!!! I will swap with you for a week! Please! I am begging! I haven't been warm since November. And 51 would feel downright balmy!!!

paint - I always have a good time teasing my northern friends this time of year...Did I mention I am eating a fresh-picked tangerine?
Ha ha, I'm sorry. I don't mean to torture!

You are a cruel cruel lad! SO unkind...specially as this morning I was bemoaning the fact that it is months until I can have a REAL fruit salad! That's okay though. I shall endevor to get even come fall when we have lucious and delicious fresh apples...

And 5 here this morning. Brutal walking into the college...even though I am not the one to have class!
